Märkkuumusest

Märkkuumusest, often translated as "waterlogging" or "soil saturation," refers to a condition where soil becomes excessively wet, to the point where all or most of its pore spaces are filled with water. This state occurs when the rate of water input exceeds the rate of water drainage and evapotranspiration. Factors contributing to märkkuumusest include heavy rainfall, poor soil drainage due to compacted layers or impermeable bedrock, and low-lying topography that prevents water from flowing away.

The consequences of märkkuumusest can be significant for plant life and soil ecosystems. When soil is waterlogged, oxygen availability in the root zone drastically decreases. Plants require oxygen for respiration, and prolonged exposure to low oxygen levels can lead to root damage, reduced growth, and eventually plant death. This oxygen deficiency also impacts beneficial soil microorganisms, affecting nutrient cycling and overall soil health.
