Märgumiskindlust, also known as moisture resistance or damp proofing, refers to the ability of a material or construction to resist the penetration and absorption of water or moisture. This property is crucial in various applications, particularly in building and construction, to prevent damage caused by dampness, mold growth, and structural degradation.

In buildings, märgumiskindlust is achieved through various methods. Damp proof courses (DPCs) are horizontal barriers installed within walls to prevent rising dampness from the ground. Damp proof membranes (DPMs) are impermeable layers used beneath floor slabs or within walls to block the passage of moisture. Specialized coatings, sealants, and renders can also be applied to surfaces to enhance their resistance to water ingress.

Materials themselves can possess inherent märgumiskindlust. Certain types of plastics, rubbers, and treated woods are naturally resistant to moisture. In textiles, water-repellent finishes are applied to fabrics to create waterproof or water-resistant clothing and gear. The effectiveness of märgumiskindlust is often measured by standards that define the rate of water absorption or penetration over a specific period. Maintaining märgumiskindlust is essential for the longevity and health of structures and products, contributing to durability and preventing costly repairs.
