Málmframleiðsla

Málmframleiðsla is the Icelandic term for metal production. This encompasses the entire process of extracting metals from their ores and transforming them into usable forms. The initial stage involves mining or quarrying the raw ore, which is then subjected to various physical and chemical treatments to concentrate the desired metal.

These concentrating processes often include crushing, grinding, and flotation to separate the metallic minerals from waste rock. Once concentrated, the ore undergoes smelting, a high-temperature process that uses heat and chemical agents to reduce the metal oxides to their elemental state. Different metals require specific smelting techniques, often involving furnaces with controlled atmospheres and temperatures.

Following smelting, the crude metal may be further refined to achieve higher purity. Refining methods can include electrolysis, distillation, or zone melting, depending on the metal and the required level of purity. The final product is then cast, rolled, or otherwise shaped into ingots, sheets, wires, or other forms suitable for industrial applications.
