Mycorrhizagombák

Mycorrhizagombák, often translated as mycorrhizal fungi, are a group of fungi that form symbiotic relationships with the roots of plants. This association is crucial for the survival and growth of many plant species, as well as for the health of terrestrial ecosystems. The name "mycorrhiza" itself derives from Greek words meaning "fungus" and "root," accurately describing this mutualistic partnership.

In a mycorrhizal association, the fungal hyphae extend from the plant roots into the soil, effectively increasing the surface area available for nutrient and water absorption. The fungi are particularly adept at acquiring phosphorus and other essential minerals from the soil that might otherwise be inaccessible to the plant. In return for these nutrients, the plant provides the fungi with carbohydrates, primarily sugars produced during photosynthesis.

There are several types of mycorrhizae, with the most common being ectomycorrhizae and arbuscular mycorrhizae. Ectomycorrhizal fungi form a sheath around the root tips and penetrate the spaces between root cells. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, on the other hand, penetrate the root cells themselves, forming specialized structures called arbuscules where nutrient exchange occurs. This symbiotic relationship benefits both the fungus, which gains a constant supply of sugars, and the plant, which experiences enhanced nutrient uptake, improved water status, and increased resistance to soil pathogens and environmental stresses. Mycorrhizal fungi play a vital role in nutrient cycling and plant community dynamics in forests, grasslands, and agricultural systems.
