Muuttoväristähtitieto, often translated as stellar nucleosynthesis or the formation of elements within stars, is a fundamental concept in astrophysics and cosmology. It describes the process by which stars create heavier chemical elements from lighter ones through nuclear fusion reactions in their cores. This process is the origin of most elements in the universe, from the hydrogen and helium formed in the Big Bang to the iron and beyond synthesized in the hearts of stars.

The process begins with the Big Bang, which produced vast quantities of hydrogen and helium, the primary building blocks of the universe. Within the immense gravitational pull of forming stars, these lighter elements are compressed and heated to incredibly high temperatures and pressures. Under these extreme conditions, atomic nuclei overcome their natural electrostatic repulsion and fuse together, releasing enormous amounts of energy. This fusion process is what powers stars and causes them to shine.

As stars age, they gradually convert hydrogen into helium. More massive stars, however, are capable of reaching temperatures and pressures high enough to fuse helium into heavier elements like carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. This process continues in successive stages, with heavier elements being formed in the cores of more massive and evolved stars. Elements heavier than iron are primarily formed during the explosive deaths of massive stars, known as supernovae. These cataclysmic events create the conditions necessary for rapid neutron capture, leading to the synthesis of the heaviest elements, which are then dispersed into interstellar space. This dispersed material can then coalesce to form new stars and planetary systems, enriching them with the elements necessary for life.
