Muuntoreaktiot

Muuntoreaktiot, often translated as transmutation reactions, refer to processes where one chemical element or isotope is transformed into another. This can occur through various mechanisms, both naturally and artificially induced.

In nature, radioactive decay is a primary driver of muuntoreaktiot. For instance, when an unstable isotope undergoes alpha decay, it emits an alpha particle (a helium nucleus), resulting in a daughter nucleus with a lower atomic number. Beta decay involves the transformation of a neutron into a proton or vice versa within the nucleus, leading to a change in the atomic number and thus a different element. Spontaneous fission, another radioactive process, can split a heavy nucleus into two lighter nuclei, also constituting a muuntoreaktio.

Artificially, muuntoreaktiot can be achieved through nuclear bombardment. In particle accelerators or nuclear reactors, atomic nuclei are struck with high-energy particles such as neutrons, protons, or other nuclei. This energetic collision can cause the target nucleus to absorb the projectile, undergo fission, or eject subatomic particles, ultimately leading to the formation of a new element or isotope. For example, the creation of transuranic elements, those heavier than uranium, is accomplished through artificial transmutation.
