Mushakjisenke

Mushakōji Senke, also known as Mushakōjisenke (武者小路千家), is one of the three principal schools of the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu). Along with Omotesenke and Urasenke, it forms the core trio of the Senke lineage, tracing its origins to Kyoto during the late Muromachi and early Edo periods. The Mushakōji line takes its name from the Mushakōji area in Kyoto, where the family residence and school were historically located.

The school developed as a distinct branch within the Senke tradition in the late 16th to early 17th centuries and is governed by an iemoto, the head of the family, who oversees the transmission of its practices and philosophy. Mushakōji Senke preserves a formal style of chanoyu characterized by precise procedures, etiquette, and a repertoire of utensils and seasonal topics. Its ceremonies emphasize a particular aesthetic aligned with the broader wabi-sabi ideal.

The Mushakōji Senke operates a global network of dojos and tea schools, with instructors and students across Japan and abroad. The iemoto system ensures continuity of instruction, guidelines, and ceremonial demonstrations. In contemporary practice, Mushakōji Senke collaborates with the other Senke schools to advance education and cultural exchange related to the Japanese tea ceremony, while maintaining its distinct lineage and interpretations.
