Murrosikäaknen

Murrosikäaknen, often referred to as adolescent acne or acne vulgaris, is a common skin condition that affects the majority of teenagers during their pubertal years. It is characterized by the appearance of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads, primarily on the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders. These blemishes occur when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells.

The hormonal changes during puberty play a significant role in the development of murrosikäaknen. Increased androgen levels stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, an oily substance that lubricates the skin. When this sebum mixes with dead skin cells, it can block the hair follicles. Bacteria, particularly Propionibacterium acnes, which normally reside on the skin, can then thrive in these blocked follicles, leading to inflammation and the formation of pustules and cysts.

While murrosikäaknen is a normal part of adolescence for many, it can sometimes cause significant emotional distress and self-consciousness. Factors such as genetics, diet (though the link is debated), and certain medications can also influence the severity of the condition. Treatment options range from over-the-counter topical creams containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid to prescription medications, including topical or oral antibiotics, retinoids, and hormonal therapies for more severe cases. Maintaining good hygiene and avoiding picking at blemishes are also recommended.
