The name Murens is derived from Old Norse mur ('wall') combined with the suffix -ens, reflecting a historic wall encircling the original settlement.

Geography and population: Located at the confluence of the Lir and Arne rivers, Murens sits among boreal forests and glacially formed lakes. The terrain features low hills and marshy wetlands along the riverbanks. The population is around 9,500 residents; the area covers about 180 square kilometers.
