Muottityypit refers to the various types of molds used in manufacturing processes, particularly in plastic injection molding, die casting, and other molding techniques. The primary function of a mold is to shape a material, typically a molten or pliable substance, into a desired form. The design and type of mold are dictated by factors such as the material being molded, the complexity of the part, production volume, and cost considerations.

Common categories of molds include single-cavity molds, which produce one part per cycle, and multi-cavity molds, which produce multiple identical parts simultaneously. These can be further classified by their gating system, which determines how the molten material enters the mold cavity. Examples include edge gates, submarine gates, and fan gates, each offering different advantages for flow control and part appearance.

Another important distinction is between two-plate and three-plate molds. Two-plate molds have a simple design where the mold is opened into two halves. Three-plate molds incorporate a runner plate that separates from the main mold halves, allowing for automatic gate removal and often facilitating more complex gating.

Compression molds are typically used for thermosetting plastics, where the material is placed into the mold and then compressed by a heated platen. Transfer molding is similar but involves transferring molten material from a separate pot into the mold cavity. For metal casting, die casting molds (or dies) are used, which are designed to withstand high pressures and temperatures. The selection of the appropriate muottityyppi is crucial for efficient production, consistent quality, and achieving the desired product characteristics.
