Muodostumisympäristöt refers to the geological environments in which specific rock types are formed. Understanding these environments is crucial for interpreting Earth's history and for resource exploration. Different processes operating under varying conditions of temperature, pressure, and chemical composition lead to the creation of distinct rock formations.

Igneous rocks, for example, form from the cooling and solidification of molten rock material. Intrusive igneous rocks, such as granite, cool slowly beneath the Earth's surface in environments characterized by high pressure and temperature, allowing large crystals to form. Extrusive igneous rocks, like basalt, cool rapidly on the Earth's surface, resulting in smaller crystals or even a glassy texture. These environments are typically associated with volcanic activity and rift zones.

Sedimentary rocks form from the accumulation and cementation of sediments, which are fragments of pre-existing rocks, minerals, or organic matter. These environments include oceans, lakes, rivers, deserts, and glaciers. Clastic sedimentary rocks, like sandstone and shale, are formed from the compaction and cementation of eroded rock fragments. Chemical sedimentary rocks, such as rock salt and limestone, precipitate from solutions. Organic sedimentary rocks, like coal, are formed from the accumulation of organic debris.

Metamorphic rocks are formed when pre-existing rocks are transformed by heat, pressure, or chemically active fluids, without melting. These transformations occur deep within the Earth's crust or where tectonic plates collide. Environments like mountain-building zones and contact zones around magma intrusions are typical settings for metamorphism. The specific minerals and textures developed depend on the original rock and the conditions of metamorphism.
