This technique is most commonly associated with older mobile phones, particularly those with numeric keypads. Each number key is assigned a set of letters, and by tapping the key multiple times, users can cycle through the available characters. For example, on a standard keypad, tapping the '2' key once might produce 'A', twice for 'B', and three times for 'C'.

This system was widely used before the advent of touchscreen devices and advanced predictive text input. While less prevalent today, multitapertyyleissä is still found on some feature phones and in accessibility options on certain devices. Its primary advantage was its simplicity and the ability to enter text using a minimal number of physical buttons.
