Multicastdistributie, commonly referred to as multicast distribution, is a method of sending data from a single source to multiple destinations simultaneously over a network without duplicating the data for each recipient. Unlike unicast, where each packet is individually addressed to a single recipient, or broadcast, where data is sent to every device on a network, multicast efficiently delivers content to a group of interested receivers.

In multicast distribution, data is transmitted using a special type of IP address known as a multicast group address, which begins with the binary prefix 1110 (or the decimal range 224.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.255). Routers and switches on the network forward multicast traffic only to those segments where at least one receiver is present, optimizing bandwidth usage.

This technique is widely used in applications such as live video streaming, online gaming, software distribution, and real-time data feeds like stock market updates. Multicast reduces network congestion and lowers bandwidth costs compared to unicast, as it avoids redundant data transmission. However, it requires network infrastructure that supports multicast routing protocols, such as IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) for host participation and protocols like PIM (Protocol Independent Multicast) or MOSPF (Multicast Open Shortest Path First) for router communication.

Multicast distribution is particularly advantageous in large-scale networks, such as enterprise environments or ISPs, where delivering content to numerous recipients efficiently is critical. However, its implementation can be complex, as it demands careful configuration of network devices to ensure proper traffic forwarding and membership management. Security considerations also play a role, as multicast traffic can be intercepted if not properly secured.
