Muistinjärjestelmät

Muistinjärjestelmät refers to the systems of memory in Finnish. In cognitive psychology, memory is not a single entity but rather a collection of distinct yet interconnected systems. These systems are responsible for encoding, storing, and retrieving information.

The most widely accepted model categorizes memory into three main types: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Sensory memory acts as a brief buffer, holding incoming sensory information for milliseconds to a few seconds. This includes iconic memory for visual information and echoic memory for auditory information.

Short-term memory, also known as working memory, has a limited capacity and duration, typically holding information for about 20-30 seconds unless actively rehearsed. It's the memory we use for immediate tasks, like remembering a phone number long enough to dial it.

Long-term memory is a vast repository of information, with seemingly unlimited capacity and duration. It can be further divided into explicit (declarative) memory, which involves conscious recall of facts and events, and implicit (non-declarative) memory, which involves unconscious learning and skills. Explicit memory includes episodic memory (personal experiences) and semantic memory (general knowledge). Implicit memory includes procedural memory (how to do things) and priming effects.
