MucosaAssociated

Mucosaassociated refers to tissues and immune components that are located in the mucous membranes lining various tracts and organs. In immunology, the term is often encountered in relation to mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), a diffuse and organized set of lymphoid tissues that provide immune defense at mucosal surfaces exposed to the external environment.

MALT includes structures such as gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) in the gastrointestinal tract, bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) in the respiratory tract, and nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT). Additional mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues are present in other mucosal sites, including conjunctiva-associated lymphoid tissue (CALT) in the eye. These tissues may be organized into follicles with germinal centers or exist as diffuse lymphoid cells, all arranged to monitor and respond to antigens encountered at mucosal surfaces.

Functionally, mucosa-associated tissues support immune surveillance and initiation of adaptive immune responses to inhaled, ingested, or contact antigens. They produce secretory IgA and other immunoglobulins to neutralize pathogens while maintaining tolerance to benign antigens. Specialized epithelial cells, such as M cells in certain mucosal sites, sample luminal antigens and deliver them to underlying immune cells.

Clinical significance includes the development of MALT lymphomas, which are extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphomas arising in mucosa-associated tissues. Gastric MALT lymphoma is commonly linked to Helicobacter pylori infection and can regress with antibiotic therapy. MALT can also participate in inflammatory or autoimmune conditions driven by chronic antigenic stimulation.
