Gutassociated is an adjective describing structures and processes related to the gastrointestinal tract, particularly its mucosal immune system. In immunology, it is often used in reference to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), the network of lymphoid tissues within the intestinal mucosa that coordinates immune responses to luminal antigens.

GALT comprises several components, including Peyer's patches in the small intestine, isolated lymphoid follicles, the appendix, and lymphocytes in the lamina propria and epithelium. M cells in the epithelium sample luminal antigens and deliver them to underlying immune cells, such as dendritic cells. B and T cells within GALT can activate and differentiate, with B cells producing IgA that is transported across the epithelium as secretory IgA to help neutralize pathogens and maintain mucosal homeostasis.

Functionally, gutassociated tissues balance immune defense and tolerance. They mount responses against pathogens while promoting oral tolerance to dietary antigens and to commensal microbiota, supporting barrier integrity and shaping systemic immunity through the migration of immune cells and the production of mucosal antibodies.

Development and regulation of GALT are influenced by early microbial colonization, diet, and signaling molecules like retinoic acid, which help imprint lymphocytes for gut homing. Dysregulation of gutassociated immunity has been linked to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, and food allergies. Conversely, oral vaccines and mucosal immunotherapies target GALT to induce protective immunity.
