Motströms

Motströms is a Swedish term meaning countercurrent or counterflow, referring to a situation where two streams or processes move in opposite directions. It is used in scientific, engineering, and colloquial contexts. The word combines mot (against) and ström (current).

In biology and physiology, motströms describes countercurrent exchange mechanisms, where two fluids flow in opposite directions to enhance the efficiency of transferring heat, gases, or solutes. Classic examples include the arrangement in fish gills, where water and blood flow in opposite directions to maximize oxygen uptake, and the counterflow heat exchange found in some mammalian limbs, where arterial blood can transfer heat to returning venous blood to conserve body heat.

In engineering, motströms configurations are applied in heat exchangers and related systems. A counterflow heat exchanger places the two fluids to flow in opposite directions, producing a larger average temperature difference along the length and yielding higher thermal efficiency than parallel-flow designs.
