Motivbewegung is a term used in music theory to describe the way a musical motif, a short, recurring musical idea, is developed and transformed throughout a composition. This development can occur in various ways, including repetition, variation, inversion, retrograde, augmentation, and diminution. Repetition involves restating the motif without alteration, while variation introduces changes to the melody, rhythm, or harmony. Inversion flips the melodic contour of the motif, and retrograde presents it in reverse. Augmentation lengthens the note values of the motif, and diminution shortens them.
