Motilitydriven, sometimes written motility-driven, is a descriptor used in biology and physics to denote systems in which movement is the central driving force behind function or organization. It can describe processes, behaviors, or materials in which active movement shapes outcomes more than static structure or external constraints.

In biology, motilitydriven processes rely on cellular or organismal movement to achieve tasks such as migration, foraging, wound repair, or colonization. Mechanisms include actin- or microtubule-based motility, motor proteins that convert ATP into mechanical work, and propulsion methods such as flagellar rotation, ciliary beating, or amoeboid locomotion. Cells coordinate movement through receptors and signaling pathways that regulate adhesion, polarity, and cytoskeletal dynamics.

Examples include immune cell trafficking to sites of infection, migratory cell populations during development, and cancer cell invasion and metastasis, where motility is essential for progression. In microbiology, bacteria employ flagella or pili for propulsion and surface interactions. In ecological and synthetic contexts, motility drives resource localization and adaptive foraging strategies, and informs the design of bio-inspired robotic systems.

In physics and materials science, motility-driven concepts arise in active matter, where self-propelled particles convert energy into directed motion. Motility-driven phase separation describes emergent behaviors in which collective motion leads to clustering and phase separation even without attractive forces. The term emphasizes how persistence, interactions, and continual energy input shape macroscopic patterns.
