Moszkva

Moszkva is the Hungarian name for Moscow, the capital and largest city of Russia. It is located in European Russia on the Moskva River and serves as a major political, economic, cultural, and scientific center of the country. Moscow is the seat of the Russian government and hosts many federal institutions, universities, museums, and cultural venues.

The city has a long history dating back to its first mention in 1147, when it was founded by Yuri Dolgoruky. It grew to become the heart of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, subsequently the Tsardom and later the Russian Empire. In the 20th century Moscow became the capital of Soviet Russia and, after 1991, of the Russian Federation. The Kremlin and Red Square are among the city’s most famous landmarks and are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As of the early 2020s, Moscow’s population is about 12 to 13 million within the city proper, with roughly 20 to 21 million people in the greater metropolitan area. The city is a global financial and business hub, with extensive transportation networks, including three major international airports (Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo) and one of the world’s busiest metro systems.

Culturally, Moscow hosts renowned institutions such as the Bolshoi Theatre, the Tretyakov Gallery, and numerous museums, theatres, and universities. It features diverse architecture from medieval to modern, including the historic Kremlin, Red Square, and notable churches and cathedrals. Administratively, Moscow is a federal city, divided into administrative okrugs and districts, governed by a mayor and city council. The climate is humid continental, with cold winters and warm summers.
