The town has a rich history dating back to the late 18th century when it was first settled by Europeans. Originally known as *Moorah*, the name was later anglicized to Moruya. The area was traditionally inhabited by the Yuin people of the Aboriginal Eora nation, who referred to the region as *Moorah*, meaning "place of the red kangaroo." The town became an important administrative and commercial center in the 19th century, particularly due to its role in timber and wool industries.
