They are generally portrayed as omnivorous scavengers that feed on stored grain, seeds, and occasional insects, and they tend to avoid direct human contact, revealing themselves mainly by movement at the edge of light.

The term’s origin is unclear; it appears in online world-building communities in the 2000s and 2010s and is treated as a coined or fictional term rather than a classically defined species. In some contexts, morbarn is used as a flexible design element to invite writers to explore rural ecologies and human-animal relationships without tying them to a specific real-world animal.

In fiction and games, morbarns function as habitat indicators, plot devices that highlight rural life, and sometimes as gentle familiars or symbols of resilience.
