Moottoriräjähdys, a Finnish term, translates to engine explosion. This phenomenon occurs when an internal combustion engine experiences a catastrophic failure, often due to excessive internal pressure or component malfunction. The rapid release of energy can result in the forceful expulsion of engine parts, significant damage to the surrounding vehicle, and potential injury to occupants or bystanders.

Causes of moottoriräjähdys are varied. Overheating can lead to a breakdown of engine lubrication, causing parts to seize and generate extreme heat and pressure. Detonation or pre-ignition, where fuel ignites prematurely or uncontrollably within the combustion chamber, can create shockwaves that exceed the structural limits of engine components. Mechanical failures, such as a connecting rod breaking or a piston disintegrating, can also initiate a chain reaction leading to an explosion. Excessive boost pressure in turbocharged or supercharged engines, if not properly managed, can also contribute to over-stressing internal components.

The consequences of a moottoriräjähdys can range from moderate to severe. Typically, the engine block might crack, pistons can be pulverized, and connecting rods can be ejected through the engine casing. The force of the explosion can also damage the vehicle's chassis, fuel lines, and electrical systems, potentially leading to secondary fires.
