Monolingvák

Monolingvák is a term used in linguistics and Hungarian discourse to describe people whose linguistic repertoire comprises a single language. The word combines mono- meaning "one" with lingvák, the Hungarian plural form related to language users, and is used to distinguish monolingual individuals from bilinguals and multilinguals.

Definition and scope: In scholarly and public usage, monolingvák refers to individuals who regularly use only one language in daily communication, education, and work. Some may have limited passive knowledge of other languages or only incidental exposure, but they do not use another language fluently in typical social contexts.

Acquisition and demographics: Monolingvák often arise in communities with a dominant language and limited exposure to others. Upbringing, schooling, migration, and media influence the likelihood of remaining monolingual. In multilingual societies, individuals may use different languages in specific settings (home, work, online) while still being monolingual in most contexts.
