Monivaikutusdistillointia, often translated as multi-effect distillation, is an industrial process used for water purification. It belongs to the family of thermal desalination techniques. The core principle involves using the latent heat of vaporization multiple times to produce distilled water efficiently.

In a multi-effect distillation system, several evaporators, known as effects, are connected in series. Feedwater is introduced into the first effect, where it is heated and vaporized, typically using steam from an external source. The vapor produced in the first effect is then used as the heating medium for the second effect, which operates at a slightly lower pressure and temperature. This cascading process continues through a series of effects, with each subsequent effect utilizing the vapor from the preceding one for evaporation.

The key advantage of multi-effect distillation is its improved energy efficiency compared to single-effect distillation. By reusing the heat of vaporization across multiple stages, the specific energy consumption for producing a unit volume of desalinated water is significantly reduced. This makes it a more economical choice for large-scale water production, particularly in regions with high energy costs or limited freshwater resources. The process can produce high-purity water, suitable for various industrial applications and drinking water.
