Moniraskaudet

Moniraskaudet refers to pregnancies involving more than one fetus. This can include twin pregnancies (two fetuses), triplet pregnancies (three fetuses), and so on. The incidence of multiple pregnancies has increased in recent decades, partly due to advances in assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

There are two main types of multiple pregnancies: identical (monozygotic) and fraternal (dizygotic). Identical twins develop from a single fertilized egg that splits into two embryos. They share the same placenta and amniotic sac, or sometimes separate sacs. Fraternal twins develop from two separate eggs fertilized by two separate sperm. They are genetically no more alike than siblings born at different times and each have their own placenta and amniotic sac.

Multiple pregnancies carry a higher risk of complications compared to singleton pregnancies. These can include premature birth, low birth weight, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and increased risk of cesarean delivery. Fetal development can also be affected, with potential for growth discrepancies between fetuses and issues related to shared placentas.

Monitoring of multiple pregnancies is typically more intensive, involving frequent prenatal check-ups, ultrasounds, and sometimes specialized care. The management aims to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and all fetuses, addressing potential risks proactively. The delivery of multiple babies often requires careful planning and a specialized medical team.
