Monimetallihalidilampun

Monimetallihalidilamppu, often abbreviated as MH lamp, is a type of high-intensity discharge (HID) lamp. It produces light by sending an electric arc through a gaseous mixture. This mixture contains vaporized mercury, metal halides, and often a small amount of a noble gas like argon or xenon to help initiate the arc. The metal halides are crucial as they contribute specific wavelengths to the emitted light spectrum, allowing for a wide range of color temperatures and rendering capabilities.

MH lamps are known for their high luminous efficacy, meaning they produce a significant amount of light relative to the energy they consume, making them energy-efficient. They also offer good color rendering, accurately representing the colors of objects illuminated by them, which is particularly important in applications like retail lighting, sports stadiums, and horticulture. The light produced is often described as bright and crisp.

The operation of a monimetallihalidilamppu requires a ballast. The ballast controls the current flowing through the lamp, preventing it from drawing too much power once the arc is established and ensuring stable operation. Without a ballast, the lamp would likely self-destruct. MH lamps take a short period to warm up to full brightness and also require a cool-down period before they can be restarted after being switched off. Their lifespan is generally longer than that of incandescent bulbs but shorter than some other HID lamp types.
