Monimaailmatulkinta, also known as global warming, refers to the long-term rise in the average temperature of the Earth's climate system, an aspect of climate change shown by temperature measurements and by multiple effects of the warming. The term commonly refers to the mainly human-induced observed warming since pre-industrial times and its projected continuation. In its most recent assessment report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that it is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century. The largest human influence has been the emission of greenhouse gases, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane. Fossil fuel burning for energy consumption is the main source of these emissions, with additional contributions from agriculture, deforestation, and various industrial processes. The scientific consensus is that global warming is causing significant changes to the Earth's climate, including rising sea levels, changing precipitation patterns, more frequent and severe heatwaves, and shifts in the timing of seasonal events. These changes have wide-ranging impacts on ecosystems, human health, and economies. The IPCC has warned that without significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the impacts of global warming will become increasingly severe and potentially irreversible.
