Monckebergféle

Monckeberg's sclerosis, also known as Monckeberg's calcification or Monckeberg arteriopathy, is a form of arteriosclerosis characterized by calcification of the elastic lamellae in the tunica media of arteries. This condition primarily affects the medium-sized arteries, particularly those in the extremities. It is distinct from atherosclerosis, which involves the buildup of plaque within the arteries.

The cause of Monckeberg's sclerosis is not fully understood, but it is strongly associated with aging. It is more common in older individuals, with prevalence increasing significantly after the age of 50. Certain medical conditions can also predispose individuals to its development, including diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and peripheral arterial disease. Genetic factors may also play a role.

Clinically, Monckeberg's sclerosis often presents with no significant symptoms. However, in some cases, the calcification can lead to arterial stiffness and narrowing, potentially causing symptoms of peripheral arterial disease such as claudication (pain in the legs during exercise). The affected arteries may feel rigid and be palpable under the skin. Diagnosis is typically made through imaging studies, such as X-rays or ultrasound, which can reveal the characteristic calcifications. Treatment is usually focused on managing underlying risk factors and alleviating any symptoms of peripheral arterial disease.
