Mohisms

Mohisms refer to a collection of sayings, teachings, and aphorisms attributed to Mohism, an ancient Chinese philosophy founded by Mozi. These principles generally emphasize a pragmatic and utilitarian approach to life, focusing on the well-being of all people. A central tenet of Mohism is the concept of "jian'ai," often translated as "impartial care" or "universal love." This doctrine advocates for treating everyone equally and with the same degree of concern, regardless of their relationship to oneself, as a means to promote social harmony and reduce conflict.

Another significant aspect of Mohisms is their strong stance against offensive warfare and excessive extravagance. Mohists believed that war was a destructive waste of resources and human life, and they actively advocated for defensive strategies and diplomacy. Similarly, they critiqued elaborate rituals, music, and funerals, arguing that these practices diverted resources that could be better used to feed, clothe, and shelter the common people. Mohisms also promoted meritocracy, advocating for individuals to be appointed to positions based on their abilities and contributions rather than their social status or lineage. The emphasis on collective good and rational decision-making is a recurring theme throughout these teachings.
