Modulelevel

Modulelevel, or module-level scope, is a term used to describe the set of declarations and bindings that live at the top of a module, outside of any function or class definitions. It defines the module’s own namespace, distinct from the program’s global scope. Typical modulelevel entities include variables, constants, functions, classes, and imports. These bindings become attributes of the module object and are accessible to other code via the module’s name or through selective imports.

The code at modulelevel is evaluated when the module is loaded or imported, not when functions are called. Once evaluated, modulelevel bindings persist for the lifetime of the program in most environments. Access to them is generally through the module’s namespace, for example by importing the module and referencing its attributes.

Design considerations: modulelevel state can be shared across modules, which offers convenient configuration and utilities but can also create tight coupling and hidden side effects. Circular dependencies can occur when modules import each other at modulelevel. Many languages provide patterns to mitigate this: guarding executable code with checks that distinguish import from direct execution (for instance, Python’s if __name__ == "__main__":) or limiting modulelevel mutation and favoring lazy initialization.
