Modelruimte

Modelruimte is a Dutch term for a dedicated room or space used in architecture, urban planning, and related disciplines to present and study scale models of proposed designs. The modelruimte typically houses physical maquettes and plan material at multiple scales, allowing designers, clients, stakeholders, and the public to inspect massing, orientations, and relationships with surrounding context.

Purpose and use: It supports design development, evaluation, and participatory processes by enabling hands-on exploration of layouts, densities, sightlines, daylight, traffic implications, and other urban factors. In municipal and corporate practice, modelruimtes function as a focal point for review sessions, public consultations, and competition submissions.

Features: Common elements include physical scale models (for example 1:500, 1:200), modular or expandable sections to accommodate evolving proposals, lighting to simulate conditions, and boards displaying plans, sections, and overlays.
