Modeindustrin, eller the fashion industry, comprises the design, production, distribution, and retail of clothing, footwear, textiles, and related accessories. It spans from high-end luxury to mass-market brands and includes activities from fiber sourcing and fabric development to marketing, merchandising, and storefront or online sales.

The industry operates through global supply chains that source materials such as cotton, synthetic fibers, and innovative fabrics, manufacture garments, and ship products to markets around the world. Major production hubs are located in Asia, with significant textile and garment activity in Europe and the Americas. Retail channels combine department stores, brands’ own stores, and increasingly e-commerce platforms.

Economically, fashion is a large employer and exporter in many countries, shaping trade, consumer spending, and seasonal cycles. It faces volatility from trends, currency shifts, and shifts in consumer behavior, including the rise of direct-to-consumer shopping and social media-driven demand.

Environmental and social concerns have driven reforms within the modeindustrin. The industry is resource-intensive, with impacts related to water use, chemical management, waste, and labor conditions. Efforts to address these issues include sustainability programs, certifications, material innovations, circularity initiatives, and regulations on chemicals and supply chain due diligence.

Recent trends emphasize sustainability, transparency, and digitalization. Brands explore recycled and bio-based fibers, rental and resale models, 3D design and virtual prototyping, and AI-driven forecasting. In Nordic contexts, modeindustrin often emphasizes ethical production, design quality, and innovation alongside commercial viability.
