Modalityand

The coinage combines the concepts of modal meaning (such as possibility, necessity, obligation) with the coordinating conjunction and, to highlight how modal information can attach to or distribute over coordinated clauses.

Definition and scope: The term encompasses both syntactic placement of modal markers relative to conjuncts and the semantic distribution of modal force across a coordinate structure. In some analyses, a modal particle or tense/mood marker may attach to the conjunction itself, signaling that the entire coordinate clause carries the modal stance. In others, modality may apply individually to each conjunct or be shared jointly by the whole construction. The modalityand framework thus helps formalize questions about scope, binding, and truth-conditional effects when coordination interacts with mood or epistemic stance.

Theoretical significance: Modalityand provides a lens for examining cross-linguistic variation in how languages encode modality with coordination.
