Mjälteoperation

Mjälteoperation, also known as splenectomy, is a surgical procedure to remove the spleen. The spleen is an organ located in the upper left abdomen, playing a role in filtering blood, fighting infection, and storing blood cells. Splenectomy is typically performed when the spleen is damaged or diseased. Common reasons for the surgery include traumatic rupture of the spleen, enlarged spleen (splenomegaly) caused by conditions like leukemia or lymphoma, or certain blood disorders such as hereditary spherocytosis or immune thrombocytopenic purpura. In some cases, it may be necessary to remove the spleen due to a spleen tumor or abscess.

The procedure can be done using either an open surgical approach, which involves a larger incision in the abdomen, or a laparoscopic approach, a minimally invasive technique using small incisions and a camera. Laparoscopic splenectomy generally results in a shorter recovery time and less pain for the patient. Following a splenectomy, individuals are at a slightly increased risk of certain infections, particularly those caused by encapsulated bacteria. Vaccinations against these bacteria are usually recommended after surgery. The body can function without a spleen, as other organs, like the liver, can take over some of its functions.
