Miyagikyo

Miyagikyo Distillery is a Japanese whisky distillery operated by Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. It is located in Miyagi Prefecture in northern Honshu, near the city of Sendai, in a valley beside the Miyagikyo River. The site benefits from a cool, temperate climate that influences the maturation of its whiskies.

The distillery was established in 1969 by Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka, to complement the company’s Yoichi Distillery in Hokkaido. The aim was to produce lighter, fruitier malts that would contrast with Yoichi’s peat-influenced style. Miyagikyo operates with copper pot stills configured to produce a range of character for its single malts.

Miyagikyo produces single malts that are typically described as elegant, fruity and floral, with a non-peat character. Core expressions are matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, creating a balance of vanilla sweetness, orchard fruit notes, and gentle spice. The facility also releases limited or age-stated expressions that explore different cask types and longer maturation.

Today, Miyagikyo remains an active part of Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., contributing to both domestic and international markets. The site offers tours and tastings for visitors who want to explore its malt production and historic setting.
