Mitotiskt

Mitotiskt, or mitotic, refers to mitosis, the division of a eukaryotic cell’s nucleus that produces two genetically identical daughter nuclei. Mitosis is essential for growth and tissue maintenance in multicellular organisms and is followed by cytokinesis, which divides the cytoplasm. It differs from meiosis, which halves the chromosome number for sexual reproduction.

Mitosis is commonly divided into prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. In prophase, chromosomes condense and the spindle apparatus begins to form. Prometaphase sees breakdown of the nuclear envelope and microtubule attachment to kinetochores. During metaphase, chromosomes align at the metaphase plate. In anaphase, sister chromatids separate and migrate to opposite poles. Telophase, with cytokinesis, re-establishes two nuclei and divides the cytoplasm.

Regulation is achieved by cyclin-dependent kinases and cyclins, with checkpoints such as the spindle assembly checkpoint ensuring proper chromosome attachment before anaphase. Proper mitosis maintains genetic stability; errors can cause aneuploidy or chromosomal instability, which are linked to cancer and developmental disorders.

In medical contexts, drugs that interfere with microtubules disrupt mitosis to halt cell division in cancer treatment. These include agents such as taxanes and vinca alkaloids, which impair spindle function and chromosome segregation, contributing to their therapeutic effects.
