Mississauga

Mississauga is a city in Ontario, Canada, located in the Peel Region of the Greater Toronto Area on the north shore of Lake Ontario, immediately west of Toronto. It is one of the country’s most populous municipalities and a major suburban center with a diverse population and a growing economy.

Historical ties lie with the Mississaugas, an Indigenous group after whom the city is named. European settlement began in the 19th century, and Mississauga developed as several separate communities. On January 1, 1974, these communities were amalgamated into the City of Mississauga to provide coordinated services and planning for rapid growth.

Geographically, the city encompasses waterfronts along Lake Ontario and inland neighborhoods such as Port Credit, Streetsville, Erin Mills, and Lorne Park. The Credit River and nearby natural areas provide parks and trails. The city’s core is centered around Square One Shopping Centre and Celebration Square.

Mississauga has a diversified economy with finance, technology, logistics, and health services. It hosts campuses of the University of Toronto Mississauga and Sheridan College, and is closely linked to Toronto Pearson International Airport. Transportation infrastructure includes Highways 401, 403, and the QEW, as well as GO Transit and expanding light rail in the Hurontario corridor.
