Missegmentations

Missegmentations are errors in dividing a continuous signal, image, or dataset into discrete segments, where the derived boundaries fail to reflect the true structure. They occur when segment borders do not align with actual units or events, causing parts of data to be split incorrectly or merged inappropriately.

Missegmentations appear across disciplines. In natural language processing and speech processing, they manifest as boundaries that do not match words, morphemes, or phonemes. In image analysis, regions may be split or merged in ways that misrepresent objects or scenes. In time-series data and genomics, missegmentations can misalign events, features, or functional units, compromising subsequent analyses. The concept is also relevant in video segmentation, medical imaging, and other domains that rely on delineating meaningful units from continuous data.

Common types include oversegmentation, where a single unit is divided into multiple segments, and undersegmentation, where several distinct units are treated as one. Boundary ambiguity, noise, limited resolution, and model biases are frequent causes. Environmental conditions, data preprocessing choices, and annotation errors can also contribute to missegmentations.

Mitigation and evaluation involve improving segmentation models and incorporating domain knowledge. Strategies include using multi-scale or hierarchical approaches, post-processing to enforce consistency, and ensemble methods. Validation against high-quality ground truth data, manual review, and uncertainty estimation help assess and reduce missegmentations. Relevant evaluation metrics vary by domain but often focus on boundary accuracy and the alignment between predicted and true segments.
