This can occur intentionally for various design reasons or unintentionally due to sourcing limitations or errors.

Intentionally, Mischbestückung might be employed to optimize space utilization on the PCB. For instance, a design might incorporate fine-pitch surface-mount devices (SMD) for dense circuitry alongside larger through-hole components for power handling or specific mechanical connections. This approach allows engineers to leverage the advantages of different component technologies within a single assembly. Another reason for planned Mischbestückung could be to accommodate legacy components that are not available in newer SMD packages, ensuring compatibility with existing systems or designs.

Unintentional Mischbestückung can arise from several factors. Supply chain disruptions may force manufacturers to substitute components with different package types if the original parts are unavailable.
