Mineraalivillakuidut, often referred to as mineral fibers, are a group of fibrous materials manufactured from inorganic sources. These materials are commonly used as insulation in buildings and industrial applications due to their excellent thermal and acoustic properties. The primary types of mineral fibers include glass wool and rock wool.

Glass wool is produced by melting silica sand and recycled glass, which is then spun into fine fibers. Rock wool, on the other hand, is made from basalt or other volcanic rocks that are melted and spun into fibers. Both types of mineral wool are inorganic, non-combustible, and resistant to moisture and pests. Their fibrous structure creates numerous air pockets, which effectively trap heat and sound.

The manufacturing process involves melting the raw materials at high temperatures and then transforming the molten substance into thin fibers. These fibers are then bound together with a resin binder to form mats, batts, or loose-fill insulation products. The density and thickness of the finished product can be varied to achieve different insulation performance levels.

Mineral fibers are widely recognized for their fire resistance, contributing to building safety by slowing the spread of flames. They also offer significant energy savings by reducing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. Environmental considerations are also relevant, as many mineral wool products are made with a high percentage of recycled content and are themselves recyclable. Proper handling and installation are recommended, though modern mineral wool products are generally considered safe for use.
