Mineraalitäytteet, or mineral fillers, are finely ground inorganic materials used to enhance or modify the properties of other substances, particularly plastics, rubber, coatings, and adhesives. They are typically added in significant quantities during the manufacturing process. The primary purpose of incorporating mineral fillers is often to reduce cost by extending the volume of the base material. However, they also serve a variety of functional roles.

Common mineral fillers include calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin clay, silica, and mica. Calcium carbonate is widely used due to its low cost and availability, improving stiffness and impact strength in plastics. Talc, with its lamellar structure, enhances rigidity, dimensional stability, and heat resistance. Kaolin clay is often employed in paints and coatings for its opacity and rheological properties, as well as in rubber for reinforcement. Silica, in various forms, can improve abrasion resistance and act as a reinforcing agent. Mica is valued for its ability to increase barrier properties and electrical insulation.

The selection of a specific mineral filler depends on the desired properties of the final product and the compatibility with the base material. Particle size, shape, and surface treatment of the filler are critical factors influencing its performance. Surface treatments, such as silane coupling agents, are often applied to improve the dispersion of the filler within the matrix and to enhance the adhesion between the filler particles and the polymer. This leads to improved mechanical properties and overall product performance. Mineral fillers are an integral part of many composite materials, contributing to both economic viability and functional enhancement.
