At the international level, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) promotes the preservation of minority languages through its Universal Declaration on Linguistic Rights. Additionally, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples emphasizes the rights of indigenous peoples to revitalize, use, and maintain their languages. The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, adopted by the Council of Europe, is a key regional instrument that protects and promotes the historical regional and minority languages of Europe.

National legal frameworks also play a crucial role in safeguarding minority language rights. Many countries have enacted laws and policies to ensure the use of minority languages in education, administration, justice, media, and public services. For example, Canada's Official Languages Act recognizes English and French as the country's official languages and provides rights to French-speaking minorities outside of Quebec. Similarly, Spain's Statute of Autonomy for Catalonia grants Catalan co-official status with Spanish in Catalonia, ensuring its use in various public domains.

The recognition and protection of minority language rights are essential for fostering inclusive societies, respecting cultural diversity, and ensuring that all individuals can express themselves in their mother tongue.
