Milán

Milán is a city in northern Italy, the capital of Lombardy and a major European economic and cultural center. It lies on the Lombard plain near the Ticino River, about 50 kilometers from the Alps.

Historically, the site began as Mediolanum, a capital of the Western Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages it became a powerful commune and later a duchy ruled by the Visconti and Sforza families. It was later part of the Habsburg realms before joining the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

Milán’s landmarks include the Duomo di Milano, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Castello Sforzesco, and Santa Maria delle Grazie, which houses Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. The city is also known for La Scala opera house and the Brera gallery. The Navigli canal system reflects its historic and modern character.

As a fashion and design hub, Milán hosts Milan Fashion Week and Milan Design Week. It is home to Borsa Italiana and serves as a center for finance, industry and media. The Expo 2015 World’s Fair was hosted in the city.

Milán is served by two international airports, Malpensa and Linate, and an extensive public transport network, including several metro lines. It hosts major universities such as the University of Milan and the Polytechnic University of Milan.

The city’s population is around 1.4 million, with a diverse international community in the wider metropolitan area.
