Milano

Milano, known in English as Milan, is a major city in northern Italy. It is the capital of the metropolitan city of Milan and of the Lombardy region. Located in the Po Valley near the Alps, it is a principal national and international center for finance, industry, commerce, and culture. As of the early 2020s, the city proper has roughly 1.4 million residents, while the metropolitan area exceeds 3 million.

Milano's economy is diversified. It is one of Europe's leading financial centers and hosts the Italian stock exchange as part of the Euronext group. The city is also celebrated as a global fashion and design capital, with the Quadrilatero della Moda and Milano Fashion Week contributing to its international profile. Its districts host a wide range of media, technology, and manufacturing activities.

Milano is home to a number of landmark sites. The Duomo di Milano dominates the city skyline, and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II connects the square to the historic Castello Sforzesco. The city houses world-class opera at La Scala and preserves Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie. The cultural scene also includes museums, galleries, and contemporary art spaces.

Milano is served by two international airports, Malpensa and Linate, and by a dense rail and metro network. It is a major hub for high-speed trains linking to other Italian cities and beyond. The city hosts several universities, including Università degli Studi di Milano, Politecnico di Milano, and Bocconi University, and is home to football clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan that play at San Siro.
