Miljödomstol

The Miljödomstol, or Environmental Court, was a specialized court in Sweden responsible for handling cases concerning environmental law. It was established in 2000 and was part of the administrative court system. The Miljödomstol had jurisdiction over a wide range of environmental matters, including permits for industrial activities, protection of water resources, waste management, and cases related to nature conservation. Its primary goal was to ensure that environmental legislation was applied consistently and effectively.

The court consisted of judges with legal expertise and specialized members with technical knowledge in environmental fields. This composition aimed to provide both legal and scientific insight into complex environmental disputes. Decisions made by the Miljödomstol could be appealed to the Land and Environment Court of Appeal, and in some cases, further to the Supreme Administrative Court. In 2016, the Miljödomstol was dissolved and its functions were transferred to the newly established Land and Environment Courts, which took over the responsibility for environmental cases and continued the work of the former Miljödomstol. The creation of the Miljödomstol was a significant step in strengthening Sweden's environmental protection framework by consolidating environmental litigation under a dedicated judicial body.
