Mikrotonveränderungen, a German term, translates to "microtonal alterations" or "microtonal changes" in English. In music, this refers to the use of intervals smaller than a semitone, the smallest interval commonly found in Western music scales. These microtonal intervals create a richer, more nuanced palette of sounds that lie between the familiar notes of the chromatic scale.

Throughout history, many musical traditions outside of Western classical music have naturally incorporated microtonal elements. Examples include the music of the Middle East, India, and various folk traditions. In Western music, the exploration of microtonality gained significant momentum in the 20th century and continues to be a field of interest for composers and performers. Composers like Charles Ives, Harry Partch, and György Ligeti have extensively experimented with and written music utilizing microtonal structures.

The practical implementation of microtonal changes requires specialized instruments or techniques. Traditional Western instruments like pianos are not typically designed to produce these smaller intervals, though some specialized instruments like fretless guitars, violins, or electronic keyboards can be adapted. Other approaches involve the careful tuning of ensembles or the use of computer-generated sounds. The perception and interpretation of microtonal music can also differ from that of standard Western tuning, often requiring a listener to adjust their aural expectations.
