Mikroplastiky

Mikroplastiky, also known as microplastics, are tiny plastic particles that are less than 5 millimeters in diameter. They are a significant environmental concern due to their widespread presence in various ecosystems and their potential impacts on wildlife and human health. Microplastics can originate from the breakdown of larger plastic debris, such as plastic bags and bottles, or from the intentional use of small plastic particles in products like cosmetics and cleaning agents.

Microplastics can enter the environment through several pathways, including the release of microbeads from personal care products, the fragmentation of larger plastic debris, and the intentional addition of microplastics to products. Once in the environment, microplastics can accumulate in sediments, water bodies, and even the air. They can also be ingested by marine and terrestrial organisms, potentially leading to bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the food chain.

The impacts of microplastics on the environment and human health are not yet fully understood, but research suggests that they can have adverse effects on wildlife, including ingestion-related injuries, reduced feeding efficiency, and disruption of physiological processes. Microplastics can also absorb and concentrate pollutants, further exacerbating their environmental impact.

Efforts to mitigate the issue of microplastics include reducing the use of single-use plastics, improving waste management practices, and promoting the development of biodegradable and compostable materials. Additionally, research is ongoing to better understand the sources, fate, and effects of microplastics in the environment.
