Mikroperlenpartikeln, often referred to as microbeads, are tiny plastic particles less than five millimeters in size. They are primarily used in cosmetic products as exfoliants and in personal care items for their abrasive qualities. Their small size allows them to effectively scrub away dead skin cells or act as a thickening agent in formulations.

The widespread use of microbeads in products like face washes, body scrubs, and toothpaste became a concern due to their environmental impact. These particles are not biodegradable and, after use, are washed down the drain and enter wastewater systems. Standard water treatment facilities are typically not equipped to filter out such small particles. Consequently, microbeads can pass through into rivers, lakes, and oceans, where they accumulate and pose a threat to aquatic ecosystems.

Marine animals can ingest microbeads, mistaking them for food. This ingestion can lead to internal injuries, blockages in the digestive system, and a false sense of fullness, potentially causing malnutrition. Furthermore, as plastics, microbeads can absorb and concentrate environmental pollutants from the surrounding water, which can then be transferred up the food chain. In response to these environmental concerns, many countries and regions have implemented bans or restrictions on the manufacture and sale of products containing microbeads. This has led manufacturers to seek alternative exfoliating agents, such as natural exfoliants like ground seeds or shells, or biodegradable synthetic alternatives.
