Mikroorganizmat, the Slovenian word for microorganism, refers to organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye and typically require a microscope for observation. These living entities belong to a broad spectrum of biological classifications, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, protozoa, algae, and viruses, each with distinct characteristics such as cell structure, metabolic pathways, and reproductive strategies.

Bacteria are single-celled, prokaryotic organisms that can thrive in diverse environments, from extreme heat to highly acidic habitats. Archaea, also prokaryotes, share similar traits with bacteria but possess unique membrane lipids and genetic sequences, allowing them to inhabit niches like hot springs and salt lakes. Fungi encompass both unicellular yeasts and multicellular molds, contributing to decomposition and nutrient recycling. Protozoa are eukaryotic single cells that often exhibit complex life cycles and motility mechanisms. Algae range from microscopic phytoplankton to large seaweeds, playing a vital role in photosynthesis and oxygen production. Viruses, although not considered cells, are viral particles that replicate by infecting host organisms and influence biodiversity and disease dynamics.

Mikroorganizmi have profound ecological impacts. They drive nutrient cycles, support food webs, and maintain soil fertility. In medicine, they can cause or prevent diseases; for instance, pathogenic bacteria are responsible for infections while vaccines often target viral antigens. Biotechnological applications include the production of antibiotics, enzymes, biofuels, and the bioremediation of pollutants. Modern techniques such as metagenomics and next‑generation sequencing enable detailed study of microbial communities, revealing their previously hidden diversity and functional roles.
